Just a Tune Up

May 26, 2020 | Stories by Gene Napier

You may have heard the story of a farmer back in the Midwest driving along in his Model T when suddenly the car quit. So he got out, opened the hood and stood there looking and wondering, scratching his head. Suddenly a fancy new car pulled up behind him and a man in a suit got out and asked the farmer if he needed help. When the farmer explained that he was having trouble with his car, the man in the suit took off his coat and got under the hood and tinkered around for a bit, then he told the farmer to get in and try the starter. The old Model T roared to life.  The farmer asked the man how he knew so much about cars, and the man replied... "Oh it was nothing, My name is Henry Ford and I invented the model T.!"

Who better to fix our car, or ourselves, that the One Who “invented” us?

Why bring this up today?  I may not need to be fixed during this lockdown, but there are times when I could use a tune-up.  I’m not running smoothly, it’s hard to get me started, I’m not well lubed, my tires are low, occasionally I backfire, my battery is not charged, and my windshield wipers are not helping me to see clearly. I don’t like this, and I wish that God would pay attention and get things back to normal.

Perhaps you need a tune-up for impatience, anger, fear, uncertainty, and frustration. I just want to remind you that we have someone better than Henry Ford to help us.  I ask you to read Psalm 139 (perhaps in The Living Bible translation). In that Psalm you will see that God has a perfect knowledge about every detail of our bodies and minds, and our situations.  He knows:

-what we are doing all the time

       -all of our habits

-what we are going to say even before we say it

-where we are all the time

-exactly how long we are going to live

       -exactly how we are made

-how to give us the very best of care

It is easy for me to stand here and tell you that God loves you and cares for you, but you shouldn’t take it from me. Take it from God Himself. If you need a little extra encouragement, consider the following:

1 Pet 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?[b] And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Lord help us all to hang in there!
