Series: The Seven Churches of Revelation
Sardis - Stayin' Alive
March 13, 2020 | Perry Kallis
Passage: Revelation 3:1-6
We use the words "life-like" to describe non-living things that appear almost living. Things like plants, animals, play food, and even people in wax museums can all appear life-like, but no amount of primping will actually bring them to life. But what happens when the words "life-like" are applied to our faith in Jesus Christ? It is an eternally serious matter to only "appear" to have spiritual life. In our study of the Seven Churches in Revelation, a church in the city of Sardis is described as "having a reputation of being alive – yet they are dead." This passage contains some serious warnings, but also some hopeful, practical prescriptions for "staying alive" in Christ.

CBS has had a reality TV show for the past 10 years entitled Undercover Boss. Each episode depicts a boss going undercover into the core of his business life to discover the reality of how his company is really doing. The last book of the Bible, Revelation, begins with a similar scenario about Jesus walking among seven specific churches in Asia Minor. But this is not past history, it is an entertaining show...it is the real reality for each and every church. Jesus IS regularly in the midst of each church and knows us deeply. This series will helps us re-discover the foundational truth of what it means “when Jesus shows up at church...”.
