The Threat of Tepid Christianity

Passage: Revelation 3:14-22
Many of us are familiar with the painting by Warner Sallman entitled: “Christ at Heart’s Door”. It was painted in the 1940’s to reflect the verse in Revelation 3:20 where Jesus declares that He “...stands at the door and knocks.” It’s easy to forget that Jesus’ words of invitation were not primarily written to unbelievers, but rather to a self-sufficient church in Laodicea that had lost its passion and purpose for the Lordship of Christ. This last of the seven churches to receive a letter in Revelation will receive both the greatest threat as well as the greatest promise from our Risen Lord. The message for the church in Laodicea is likely the truth that most closely matches the need for application among churches in our current age of modern ministry.
CBS has had a reality TV show for the past 10 years entitled Undercover Boss. Each episode depicts a boss going undercover into the core of his business life to discover the reality of how his company is really doing. The last book of the Bible, Revelation, begins with a similar scenario about Jesus walking among seven specific churches in Asia Minor. But this is not past history, it is an entertaining show...it is the real reality for each and every church. Jesus IS regularly in the midst of each church and knows us deeply. This series will helps us re-discover the foundational truth of what it means “when Jesus shows up at church...”.
